Building a bonfire by committee
Bonfire Night is next Thursday, and you have joined the committee running the one on the playing field, which is how you came to be holding a list of everything that could go wrong. It is long. Monday’s meeting may lengthen it. On Thursday this week, choose the two items that genuinely matter, the fencing and the stewards, and hand the rest to other people. Saturday is building day, with volunteers, gloves and a small mountain of pallets.
Love
Your partner, or the friend who signed up with you, may be enjoying the committee more than you are, having not read the risk assessment. Let them. On Saturday, work beside them, not behind them. At the end, thank the volunteers by name, including the man who did no lifting at all but brought soup in a flask for everyone.
Work and money
That new colleague’s spreadsheet is not how you would have built it, and it works. Leave it alone. On Tuesday, ask them to show you how it runs; there may be a shortcut in it worth borrowing. Keep your mornings for your own work and open the committee emails only after lunch, or Bonfire Night will quietly eat your week before it has begun.
Body and mind
Saturday on the field is likely to be cold, physical and longer than anyone says. Wear two more layers than seems reasonable, proper boots and work gloves, and bend your knees for the heavy pallets. Eat properly before you set out. On weekday evenings, put the list in a drawer at nine; a risk assessment read in bed makes for a very long night.
Thursday, for choosing the two risks that matter and trusting others with the rest
